Blue Fin Boats/E-Propulsion Hinze Dam BASS Electric Qualifier

20160807_123040The 4th round of the Bluefin/ePropulsion BASS Electric Series visited the always popular Hinze Dam on the Gold Coast. There is plenty of structure to fish and the excitement of trying to extract a hooked bass from heavy structure is always heart in mouth action.

Thirty six anglers turned up to challenge themselves against the bass and timber. Early reports suggested that the dam had rolled three weeks earlier but was still fishing well. 19 anglers weighed full bags, 12 weighed one fish and 5 anglers were unsuccessful. A total of 50 bass were weighed for a total weight of 41.40kg.=

Most anglers headed deep into the timber in search of their quarry while a handful opted to try their luck in the open water near the dam wall and the quarry. The angler that rose to the top of the dam was local bream angler Trent West. He fished near the quarry and dam wall using Keitech soft plastics. Beginning with a slow roll retrieve to fill his bag he then changed to a technique used down south on Glenbawn Dam, vertical jigging bass that were hugging the bottom. He scored a valuable upgrade that helped secure his bag on a tough bite.

Graham Dodds left before I could interview him so I guess he used a rod and reel with some line. Attached to the end of the line is a lure and he used that to catch his bass. This technique also scored big bass for the day.

Rounding out the top three was the effervescent Dave Young. He targeted timbered areas near the dam wall using a finesse buzzbait from Jackall called the Derabuzz. He would cast this lure into heavy timber, and keeping his rod tip high used a fairly fast retrieve to bring it out. The action proved too enticing for the bass and boosted Dave into 3rd position.

The new pay back scheme paid down to 9th position this round and was very popular with the anglers.

A special mention goes to Adrian Wilson who donated a $150 Barrabass gift voucher for a lucky draw prize. It was won by a new angler to the sport and the BASS Electric Series, Tim Nagano.

A big thank you to all the anglers who participated in the Hinze round and to the ABT for running a great series.
