The regular season BassCat BASS Pro events are done and dusted for the year, and the BassCat BASS Pro Grand Final is coming up quick, and that means it’s also time to get your name down for the Costa BASS Megabucks.
Happening during mid-week, after the BassCat BASS Pro Grand Final, the Costa BASS Megabucks is set to blow the roof off Somerset Dam (If there was a roof). September has long been considered the premier month and time to visit Somerset to chance your hand at the countries biggest bass. The current ABT record of 3.82kg was caught from the waters of Somerset and there’s every chance we could see that mark eclipsed once Megabucks week is over.
Megabucks is a popular teams skins event, whereby teams compete over three sessions, with the weights zeroed after every weigh in. Fail in the first session? Don’t worry about it, you could still bounce back and win sessions two and three. It’s a fantastic format to allow anglers to fish for the win, and not worry about piecing together a weekend bag limit. Swing for the fences and you just might hit, that’s what Megabucks is all about.
This year, with Megabucks held after the Grand Final, it’ll be a great chance to sit back with your fellow anglers and reflect on the year of 2016. Swap stories and share laughs, and look forward to what we have in store for 2017. It’s the ultimate wrap up to what is now a seriously hectic bass tournament calendar.
Last year, Megabucks was on NSW’s Lake St Clair, and the on-song bass duo of Peter Phelps and Mitchell Cone cleaned up. Winning all three sessions and big bass in each, walking home with a bag full of cash and prizes.
This year sees a new sponsor headline the event, with sunglasses giant Costa coming on as naming sponsor for the highly popular event. Costa’s marketing manager Tom Slater, a keen bass angler himself, is looking forward to the event. “The Megabucks event fits perfectly with Costa’s ethos and mission. We’re all about enabling anglers to enjoy their time on the water through providing them with unparalleled optical clarity and performance. The Megabucks event is all about enjoying yourself, you get to team up with a friend or partner and go hard for every session. It’s really a tournament where going completely off the wall doesn’t have too many setbacks. You can’t win or lose a Megabucks in session one, or session two, or three for that matter. Each session is its own mini tournament, and we’re very happy to be sponsoring the event this year.”
Costa pro and current BASS Grand Final champion Peter Phelps is looking forward to finishing off the year with a relaxed go-
for-broke Megabucks. “Last year’s Megabucks was before the Grand Final, so during the whole tournament you were always thinking about the big show that was only a few days away. Now with the Megabucks after the Grand Final, it’ll be a great way to wind down after a big year tournament fishing”.
