Mercury thrills with four new engines

350HP Verado
Mercury Marine has excited boat lovers, dealers and boat builders with four new engines which have already left the competition behind.

  • Verado 350hp outboard
  • Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboard
  • Mercury Racing QC4v 1550 sterndrive, and the
  • Mercury MerCruiser 4.5-litre 200hp sterndrive.

Verado 350

Built on Mercury’s proven FourStroke supercharged inline six-cylinder technology, the Verado 350 delivers unsurpassed speed and overall performance without sacrificing durability and cruise fuel economy.

Weighing just 303kgs, the Verado 350 is 43kgs lighter than the nearest four-stroke competitor and operates on regular unleaded fuel, with Premium Unleaded recommended for full performance.

This engine has superior torque across the operating range, creating a rocket-like holeshot and faster top-end speed.

The Verado 350’s new cold-air intake system is designed to collect cool, fresh air from outside the cowl and deliver it efficiently to the supercharger. Its larger, straighter airflow path was engineered to create less-turbulent airflow. The water-cooled supercharger delivers greater boost by utilising water from the engine cooling system to provide a cooling jacket around the supercharger.

Other features include the top cowl’s unique labyrinth design, a styled vented flywheel cover, optimised guide plates that maximise driver handling at high speeds, and Verado’s robust and proven 5.44-inch diameter gearcase.

The all-new Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboard is the most powerful consumer outboard ever produced by Mercury and provides the highest power-to-weight ratio of all four-stroke outboards in its class.

The Racing Verado 400R features a custom performance calibration. A cold-air induction system provides improved air flow and power development, while at 400R with SportMaster gearboxthe same time significantly reducing intake noise for improved sound quality.

An all-new water-cooled supercharger is designed to reduce intake temperatures and significantly increase air density, enabling the engine to generate unprecedented torque and unmatched acceleration all the way from the lower end of the power band up to the 7,000 rpm maximum engine speed.

Electronic knock control enables the engine to be compatible with regular unleaded fuel when the recommended Premium unleaded fuel is not available to maximise performance.

The 400R is the first Verado to feature the race-proven Sport Master gearcase with low water pickups for added performance.

The Verado Racing 400R is the first Mercury Racing outboard to feature Joystick Piloting for Outboards (JPO) technology. Mercury Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS) removes the lag and hesitation of traditional throttle and shift cables, while Mercury Racing’s ergonomic, high-style Zero Effort Digital controls go hand-in-hand with Joystick Piloting for an intuitive control experience.

Mercury Racing 1550 sterndrive

Mercury Racing’s new QC4v 1550 dual-calibration sterndrive is designed for racers looking for the sheer power of a 1550hp race engine which can be run a recreational 1350 on normal fuel.

An advanced control system enables the operator to switch the engine’s power level. Using an electronic key fob, drivers can choose between a purebred race machine, which pumps out 1,550hp on 112 AKI race fuel, or a high performance leisure ride at 1350hp on 98 RON Premium unleaded fuel.

4-5L_200HP_RWC_WaterHBoth calibrations provide maximum torque and efficiency and are designed to optimise engine performance at each power level. This dual calibration essentially gives you two engines in one, both backed by a factory warranty.

The electronic fobs work off Mercury’s Theft Deterrent System (TDS) which disables the vessel when an assigned electronic key is not engaged.

The 1550 is the latest generation of Mercury Racing’s exclusive QC4v (quad cam four valve) engine platform. Engine durability has been enhanced with forged race pistons designed for 112 AKI race fuel for maximised torque and efficiency. An all-new intercooler filter with stainless steel element and housing is designed for ease of removal and cleaning while keeping smaller debris, such as sand, from entering the intercooler.

The 1550 also features an engine-mounted hot lead to easily connect to vessel battery isolators.

The 9.0-liter QC4v cylinder block and head design, combined with SmartCraft Digital Throttle & Shift (DTS), provides big power with luxury-car-like drivability.

4.5L 200hp sterndrive unit

Designed and manufactured at Mercury Marine’s world headquarters in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, the 4.5L 200hp sterndrive is based on the 4.5L 250hp sterndrive introduced by Mercury last year.

Since then the MerCruiser 4.5L has established new standards for acceleration and overall performance, with design innovations such as a long runner scrolled intake manifold and high displacement which produces an outstanding power-to-weight ratio.

The 4.5L delivers maximum fuel efficiency and exceptionally quiet operation. Its newly designed rear-facing throttle body, anti-whistle throttle plate, engine cover and mounts, lightweight flywheel, fuel supply module, and structural oil pan all work together to deliver superior sound quality and smoothness from idle all the way through the power band for a better boating experience.

The 4.5L V6 also offers Adaptive Speed Control (ASC), which automatically maintains the set rpm point regardless of load or condition changes, such as tight turns, tow sports and lower speeds on plane. The result is increased throttle response and a “sportier” feel for the driver, who no longer has to make continual throttle-control adjustments.

Mercury Marine built the ultimate anti-corrosion protection system into the 4.5L V6, using durable cast-iron componentry wherever the engine encounters seawater, and corrosion-resistant aluminium and composites everywhere else. Digital rather than analogue sensors are used throughout.
