One of the nicest guys that you’ll ever meet and a tournament angler with talent to burn Grayson Fong is man on a mission. A mission to catch as many fish as he can and have as much much as is humanely possible. Equally at home in a kayak, or boat (and the back of the boat as a non-boater) Grayson is angler who lives and breaths the ABT motto of “who shares wins”.
1. Name, age, and location-
Grayson Fong, 40y.o. residing in Hendra Queensland
2. How long have you been fishing ABT events-
This is my 7th year
3. Greatest achievement in tournament angling-
Winning two ABT Non Boater Qualifiers and my 3rd place at Hobie Fishing World Championships 2013
4. Preferred tournament species-
5. Favourite tournament location-
Mallacoota and Clarence River. They are similar in a lot of ways but both have great challenges.
6. Your go-to technique-
My go-to technique depends on the depth I am fishing. I really enjoy crankbaiting but over the last few years have tried to develop a go-to technique for all depths giving me less flaws in my game.
7. Your favourite lure-
Jackall Chubby 38F Deep in Brown Suji Shrimp
8. Your most feared competitor-
I never fear a competitor, I fear their ability. That’s why I love Non Boating so much, as it gives me not only the chance to compete against anglers in my category but also against the boater I draw for the day.
9. What, if any, sponsors do you have-
I have the pleasure to be looked after by several great people in the fishing industry especially Tom Slater at 13 Fishing Australia and Stormr, Steve Steer at Cranka Lures, Craig Simmons at FishTec Solutions, Adam Costa at www.fishin.com.au and Gareth Williams at TT Lures. Each of these people certainly make it easier for me to hit the water well prepared.
10. How many days a month do you fish-
Enough. Being on the water is my outlet in life, whether land based or on a boat I always try to make time. A understanding wife helps big time too!!
11. How much a year would you spending on tournament tackle-
Haha depends who is reading this. Proceed to question 12 thank you.
12. Dream fishing location-
I just saw a video on Alphonse Island in Seychelles. It looks epic.
13. Most embarrassing moment in a tournament-
Going through the entire three days of a Qld Open with the weighmaster calling you ‘Jason Bong’ on stage.
14. Favourite place to eat on the road-
Any place that serves a Chicken Parmigiana!! Or sells Maxibons.
15. How many tournament donuts have you had to eat-
More than I can remember unfortunately. As with many anglers it’s always a major goal for the day to avoid the dreaded donut but I always see it as a learning opportunity as much as a day of catching heaps of legals. I have come to realise this sport is about adaption.
16. 1 outfit, 1 lure, 1 location-
6’10 Envy Black matched with Daiwa Certate 2506, Cranka Crab, Any Seaway…. Not for the faint hearted!
17. The tournament moment that broke your heart-
Having a big fish die on the first day of the Qld Open 2014. I told my partner Tom Slater that I think that fish will cost us at the end of the three days of fishing and subsequently we lost the event by 220g, an amount easily covered by this kicker fish. To rub salt in the wound we finished in 3rd by a mere 10 grams.
18. Superstitions and rituals-
Cuppa tea and Arnott’s Assorted Creams are a must!
19. Hardest venue-
Tweed River, she hasn’t been kind to me….yet.
20. Dream fishing companion-
Mike Iaconelli. So I can get some ‘breakdancing on the front deck’ tips for when I win the ABT Grand Final.
