When father and son duo Phil and Jonathan Edgar decided to produce custom tenders, they had two unwavering goals – to
create craft with exceptionally high performance and an international-class finish.
The company they started is JP RIBS. Their first creation is the Custom 800. Their chosen engine is the Mercury Racing Verado 400R.
With a staggering 153 horsepower per litre, the Verado 400R is the most powerful consumer outboard ever produced by Mercury with the highest power-to-weight ratio in its class.
Exactly what the Edgars ordered.
“We were so set on working with Mercury because of the reliability and popularity of their engines around the world,” said Jonathan Edgar, a highly experienced superyacht captain and son of Phil.
“The engine has exceeded our expectations. It’s delivered our top speed goals of 50-plus knots, while maintaining exceptional manoeuvrability at cruising speed.
“In short, we’re thrilled with the outcome and we can’t wait to work with Mercury again.”
JP RIBS handcrafts its tenders in New Zealand’s Northland, combining a stunning finish and high-spec technology with impeccable craftsmanship.
“We’re not interested in mass production because we want to ensure every tender is designed to the client’s specifications. It has to answer their specific needs and be everything they want,” Jonathan said.
In that case, the Mercury Racing Verado 400R is the ideal selection with cutting-edge performance, passenger comfort and stylish design.
An all-new water cooled supercharger enables the Verado 400R to generate unprecedented torque and unmatched acceleration all the way along the power band.
Simultaneously, the engine’s custom cold air induction system significantly reduces intake noise, making the notoriously quiet Verado even less intrusive, while stainless steel guide plates stabilise the engine for improved durability and rock solid handling at high speeds and in rough seas.
The Custom 800 was recently launched concurrently at the Monaco Yacht Show the Auckland On Water Boat Show to great reviews.
