The Gippsland Lakes system together with the Metung Hotel will host the second stop of the ABT Costa BREAM Series as the tour hits town for the tournament stretching Tuesday-Thursday.
Anglers from all over the country will descend on the lakeside town of Metung as they battle it out for thousands of dollars’ worth of cash and prizes on the largest tournament venue the tour visits all year.
The ABT BREAM Series is a national fishing tournament stretching eight events over five states and culminating in an end of year championship in which the eventual champion takes home a boat/motor/trailer package worth more than $50,000.
Anglers are divided into two categories, boater and non-boater. The non-boaters are paired with two boaters who supply the tournament vessel. The two anglers fish off the one boat each day, catching their largest five bream limit. The fish are kept alive in large capacity re-circulating live wells inside the boats and brought back to the Metung Hotel each day at 2pm where they are weighed in and then released back into the lakes system – making this an 100% catch and release tournament.
The Gippsland Lakes system is one that polarises tournament anglers, some have had incredible success here. Weighing in massive bags of five bream weighing over six kilos. Others, have driven all around the vast lake system and it’s three major rivers without much to show for it. There’s no arguing that the Gippsland Lakes system produces some of the best bream fishing in the country, it’s also renowned for some of the biggest bream ever to be caught on rod and reel.
Will we see someone break the magic six kilo mark as they present their weigh bag to the scales? Turn up to the Metung Hotel at 2pm on the 24th and 25th of February to find out!
