The 2016 BARRA Tour is heading north on the November full moon with a brand new naming sponsor. Welcome to the 2016 Zerek BARRA Tour.
Hitting the fantastic QLD impoundments of Teemburra, Kinchant and Peter Faust, the four-event series will give anglers a taste of the best barramundi fishing Australia has to offer. Run in November, the tour will coincide with the best fishing period of the year on the full moon, and session times have been tweaked to coincide with peak fishing windows.
Zerek have come onto the Australian fishing tackle scene in a big way over the last few years, thanks to their distributor Wilson Fishing. Born in 2008, Zerek was started by a group of lure enthusiasts, professional anglers as well as a group dedicated to product development.
Zerek stormed onto the market with the introduction of their popular Live Shrimp, which was a smash hit with northern anglers. Now the flourishing lure brand has a range that covers all sorts of Australian conditions and species, from small finesse offerings for bream, to stickbaits and other lures suitable for an array of bluewater species. But it’s their range of barramundi lures that makes Zerek a perfect fit to headline the ABT BARRA Tour.
Stephen Booth, marketing manager for Wilson Fishing is excited at the prospect of introducing the Zerek brand to BARRA Tour anglers, and more importantly the wider recreational angling community in northern Australia.
“We’ve had some great success with our Live Shrimp and Live Cherabin in northern Australia, and we’ve got a lot of other baits that are equally effective for catching species like barramundi,” said Booth. “Lures like our Zerek Flat Shad, Barra-X, Ripper Diver and Fish Trap should appeal to the anglers on the Zerek BARRA Tour.”
Last year’s BARRA Tour Team of the Year member Karim De Ridder is looking forward to the 2016 dates.
“This year’s tour will test both seasoned and novice anglers alike. The sessions are spread across the best barra dams in the country. Everything is leading up to the finale at Peter Faust, on the November full moon. I’m confident our 11m record from 2015 will be beaten!”
Dan Curry, a member of last year’s Teemburra Night Championships winning team is equally adamant that great fishing is in store for the teams that hold out for the last event at Peter Faust,
“This years ABT Barra Tour is set to be a perfect platform to test anglers with session times and dates that have been picked to provide some great fishing in the country’s best barra dams. But that all nighter at Peter Faust Dam on the November full moon should produce some crazy sessions with absolute giants!”
Zerek and Wilson Fishing Pro Jono Clark had some great success on the 2015 BARRA Tour. With his sponsors headlining the tour for 2016, we expect to see Jono not only out there catching monsters, but also showcasing how well his favourite Zerek lures work. “During last year’s ABT BARRA Tour, records were smashed. I’m expecting much of the same this year, as the fishing in these impoundments is only getting better. With the tweaks to the session times and the tour timed to coincide with the November full moon, everything is pointing to a record year for the Zerek BARRA Tour.”
With this in mind, we’re expecting a great turn out of keen anglers from all over the country. After experiencing the enjoyment of the 2015 tour, southern angler and long-time ABT BREAM and BASS competitor Tom Slater is very keen to attend the Zerek BARRA Tour.
“The 2015 BARRA Tour was the first time I’d caught a barra since leaving my childhood home in Collinsville when I was 11,” said Slater. “I learnt more about impoundment barra fishing in that week than I could have ever hoped to fishing socially, I’m keen to take that knowledge from last year and use it to put a few more barra in the boat this year.”
Entry forms will soon be online for the 2016 Zerek BARRA Tour, and are available along with tournament dates on www.abt.org.au. Keep an eye out in the August edition of Fishing Monthly Magazines as we’re busy putting the final touches on our inaugural BARRA Tour Guide, which will feature as a pull out inside the Fishing Monthly publications.
